Research on vocabulary indicates that reading is the best vocabulary builder. Children in the elementary grades learn 10 words a day (A DAY) when they read. Learning words in context is how you learned to speak, and that worked pretty well didn’t it. Or did your parents have vocabulary lists for you when you were two?

Review books, word lists, etc are way less effective than reading. So, read good literature with hard vocabulary. Like, no kidding, British detective fiction like Poirot, Holmes, Marple . . . anything with a hard vocabulary for you. Read, read, read . . . Newspapers and magazines are written at a low (typically 9th) grade level, so they don’t count. Smithsonian, or National Geo are a little harder, but not too much. Ask a teacher for a list of books at a 12th grade level, or a college level.

Most of all, read. It builds vocabulary, it is fun, it builds critical thinking, it is fun if you read the right stuff for you.

Oh god, I barely studied any vocab and I ended up with a 740 on the CR section. The key is not studying words, but rather studying word roots. That way, you can decipher the meaning of words without actually having to memorize them. I mean, seriously, there is no way that you can know every single word on the SAT. Just make sure you get the Reading Comprehension down. The vocab is worth very little compared to it.

Also, two years is way too early to start studying for this test. Just relax, wait a year or so, and then start out slowly. You can’t enjoy high school if you’re studying the whole time!

Well Ethan is right. You can’t memorize every single word on the SATs. However, if u really wanna build of ur vocab and start from now on, start reading the magazines like Times n newspapers like Star Ledger or grab some interesting books from the library. The thing is that when u gonna start reading the stuff, the words repeat themselves in every other text, so u gonna see each word and how its being used and when. In short, dont memorize by making a word list, instead grab some reading pieces and read em! Its gona help! cheers!

I took an SAT prep class in high school and they had us learning about 25 vocab words per week. We also worked on analogies, root words, word origins/meanings, etc. You’re doing the right thing by starting early and practicing little by little… it’s really a lot better than trying to cram it all in a few weeks before the test.

I would read Barron’s Verbal book, and I would memorize that huge list. There is no guarantee that any of those words will show up, but they are frequently tested words.

I would use the words that you learn in everyday life and in essays at school or on the SAT writing section.
