Most colleges publish an “average” SAT score chart for admitted freshmen. For example, UCLA has an average of 657 in reading, 689 in math, and 662 in writing, for a grand total of 2008. See if you fall near the average for your target school. The U.S. average SAT score is around 1500-1600, most selective universities will require a good deal higher (1800 and above). If you have a community college in mind, low SATs will not prevent admission.

If this was the total of all three sections, you should retake the exam after some serious studying. It is completely unecessary to take “SAT prep” classes in order to score well. Simply get a prep book from any bookstore for $10-15 and spend about an hour a day taking practice tests. You WILL do better. Set a goal and go for it.

if you got 1470 out of 1600 then its very good. your scores are good for almost all the colleges out there. if you got a 1470 out of 2400, you should work on getting that up because average 4-year colleges are looking for 1800-1900 ranges.

The average total score is approximately 1,538 points (520 in Math, 510 in Writing, and 508 in Critical Reasoning).

A lot of colleges do the “whole person” concept. So if you participate in sports, extracurricular activities then you might be okay.

Each college is looking for different numbers. There’s no absolute number (or at least they won’t admit to it if there is).

On the new SAT or the old one? Or are you just averaging verbal and math.

If that’s the verbal and math, you’re good to go. If that’s all three, then you did ok, but not amazing.
