I am IB student willing to do ANYTHING to get straight A’s in my classes!?

I am currently and IB student and I really really want to get straight As the classes im taking are Pre-Ib world history, Pre-IB English, Pre-Ib Biology, and Pre-Ib Algebra 2.

I am currently struggling with World History as the tests are worth most of your grade and I can’t seem to remember everything.

I am also struggling with English because I read at my own pace but I am smart, but I do need extra time to actually grasp concepts in difficult or boring literature books.

It would help if you could tell me what I can do to improve at everything and give some good testing and studying advice.. Thanks!

Ah, no fair, my school doesn’t allow IB classes as a freshman =(

And those are freshman classes here, so I’m just assuming ^^;;

I remember struggling a lot w/ WH though, and I still pulled 98’s, so don’t stress too much. Summarize as you read, and learn to find the information your teacher might ask on a test. Some teachers care about specific dates, some don’t – make sure to ask your teacher before the test.

As for English, there’s really nothing you can do about boring books. Uhm, try sparknotes? >< A nice thing to try also is flashcards. I know everyone hates them, and I did too, but after you get used to carrying them around, they're a huge help. Especially if you're really low on time like me; you can pull them out while waiting in line, or in the car, or anything like that. In addition, you'd be surprised how much just writing down summarized stuff helps.

I don’t know if it will work for you, but every time you do grasp the idea or concept, take a bite of ice-cream, candy or favorite snack. If you don’t get it, don’t eat it. You must keep yourself on the honor system!!!

Second, each night, study before the test.

BUT, get a single sheet of notebook paper…

Only number it to the bottom(22 or 26) Don’t write any notation down…Say to yourself…”Number 1. The king has to be Crowned by(answer out loud)” then make a tiny stick figure of your answer on the space after the number one….You will do this for all your notes, front and back of the paper…If you don’t remember the whole answer in words while taking the test, you will remember the little stick figure you drew for each answer, (all of them will be different, use different color ink, symbols, just no words) and the stick figure in turn will remind you of the words/answer you were thinking of while drawing it!

If you can try studying with others. It always helps me to go over the textbooks with other people and reword what is written or listen to others explain it in a new way “So what they’re saying is…” “Oh, that’s like the time I…” “I saw a show about this…”. Discussing the text in a different way usually helps me to connect with it and I always see better results on the test than if I had read through the textbook alone.

I used to find flash cards useful. You could make cards with the question on one side and the answer on the other and study that way with a friend, sibling or parents. They could ask you the question and you could give them the answer.
