In the Wechsler set of tests (at least on the WISC-IV) most of the subtests do not have a timed element to the scoring except in these cases:

Main Subtests

Perceptual Reasoning

Block Design – at the higher levels one receives “bonus points” for creating the designs quickly. So if you figure out the design within the standard amount of time, it does not hurt you

Processing Speed

Coding – a two minute time limit is set and the subject must “answer” the questions as quickly as possible. Time is definitely taken into account on this subtest.

Symbol Search – pretty much the same theory as Coding

Secondary Subtests

Picture Completion

Cancellation

Arithmetic

In my opinion the WISC-IV does not rely much on the subject’s time to complete a task except on the Processing Speed subtests that actually are looking at how quickly a subject can process information.

there are various IQ tests, Im 17 and while not an expert, I have taken many. Most of the more precise tests should carry with them a time limit. Because part of what IQ tests are trying to decipher is the person being tested’s ability to form visuals in their head of certain problems, or whatever way they problem solve mentally. Now obviously someone who is very good at that would get it done quicker on an average than say the village idiot. Yet I’m sure even the idiot could figure out what shape comes next after an hour of trying the possibilities. Its all about realization, planning, and then execution of the problems given. Speed is very important for these skills. But yes there are some tests which do not time the individuals taking them. By the way, what was your score? I usually get back a number around 147, but Ive been taking the adult tests since I was a kid, I wonder what I could get now?

Hope that helps. The timed tests, obviously will take off for any excess time you spend over the limit, and some may just stop you after 10 minutes and count up the ones you answered, but on these, be careful not to try and guess on the ones you dont have time for because it takes off for that too.

If it is a real IQ test, yes, the time you take to answer some of the questions affects the score.

On some tests it does. There are tests where time does not matter.
