Do you think that college students are becoming nothing but products for recruiting?

I mean isn’t college education baout just more than getting a job? With all these college rankings and books of rankings.

The answer to your main question is unfortunately yes. And you correctly note that that is a serious problem. But the good news is that you will find many professors who share your view and will welcome your attitude.

No, for some students college is about a job, and they find a college that reflects that world view. These folks end up with technical skills are are worker bees.

Yes, for some students college is about an education, and they find a college that reflects that world view. These folks end up in charge.

Maybe, some students want both.

Different colleges, remember that there are 1600 4-year colleges in the US, will emphasize different things. Some, like Knox, are seriously about education and learning. Some, like MIT, are seriously about technical training and jobs. Some, like pretty much any school with “state” or the name of a state in its name tries to be all things to all people.

The rankings industry looks only at a small segment of the things that make colleges different. In reality (see How College Affects Students) the learning outcomes in majors does not vary that much from campus to campus. What is different is emphases on liberal arts, education, critical thinking, and involvement.

The books and rankings are quite useful, even for people interested in getting an education, and not just a job. They shouldn’t be taken too seriously, but with so many colleges and universities out there, these books are necessary in order to narrow down the number of schools to a workable number for further investigation.

Nope its about getting a job why would you spend up to 30,000 or more on it excluding student loans? You go to college in hopes it will help you find a career. If college wasn’t about being more insure to get a career no one would go sinceI there is a lot of other things that you could do with 30K instead of college. The whole purpose of college is to make you “qualified” to get a job. Nope they have rankings for party schools but what you should look at is the graduation rate and retention rate.

its alot of prissy thinking behind these schools. I had a 3.5 in highschool and was in three national honor societies and I know someone with a GED that got in a college I have been rejected from. Because Iam missing one algebra credit, I have great difficulty getting in state colleges. DONT ever trust a community college.
