Domenico Scarlatti was a 18th century composer who wrote mainly keyboard (harpsichord) music in Spain (check him out at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domenico_Scarlatti). There were other composers named Scarlatti but he’s the best known.
In the story it looks like Scarlatti is just a symbol of classical music & she was fed up with listening to him play. …Tilted her mind? And so she shot him. (Listening to someone learning the violin can be a pain)
If you read other stuff by Brautigan, you’ll see that he often says things just to start a thinking process going in the reader’s brain. Beyond that I have no ideas here.
