Idea for Epic Hero story?

I have to write a story for language arts that follows the epic hero guideline. For those of you who don’t know what that is, it’s a guy, charged with a quest, has friends, enters some sort of supernatural/mythical world, almost dies or something, completes the task, happy ending.

I’m just not very creative, If any of you have an idea just to start me off, that would be great.

If its an Epic hero story, and you’re looking for a guide line to the structure it follows, i’d have to suggest briefly looking into The Hero with a Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell.

Its non-fiction exploring the theory of an archetypal hero in mythology and stories. Campbell explores the theory that myths from around the world all share a fundamental structure.

The reading is a little bit heavy, but theres some great information in the book.

Epic heroes do not have to have a ‘special power’ in order to be epic heroes. Where did you get that idea?
