My daughter is a special education student who last year was on the honor roll for the whole year. She takes the same classes that most of the other high school students take in NYS unless they are in honor classes or taking classes for college credit which she will do next year. AT the end of this year she will take the same state regents as any other student and if she passes 5 regents in different subjects she’ll get a regents diploma when she graduates. That’s the highest diploma she can get in NYS. Being in a school for children with special educations needs has made sure that she’s taught the way that she needs to learn so that she’s more likely to learn and to be able to succeed.

I’ve taught students in special ed. The whole purpose is to help each student get a great education based on what is best for just that student. That’s why an Individual Education plan is written and signed by parents and teachers. But the student still has to have the drive and desire to do the best he or she can.

If you have qualified for special ed services in secondary school, you can also get a little extra help – not as extensive, but still helpful- at a university or college.
