Brain Teaser?

Suppose three 3rd graders can sit comfortably within one square yard of carpet. How many 3rd graders of the same size could sit in a region of carpet that is 27 feet by 36 feet? Assume that the kids are sitting comfortably in so that no more or less than three kids will fit within one square yard.

Well, 27 feet by 36 feet is 9 yards by 12 yards. How many square yards is that? 9 x 12. Then how many kids per square yard? 9 x 12 x 3.

I would say 2,916, but that doesn’t mean I did it right. I’ve never been very good at these things. I multiplied 27 by 36 and the multiplied the answer by 3.
