The only source I can find online is from a rather obscene, rambling, autobiographical post (supposedly a poem titled “I Need a Subsidy for This”) by a fellow named Mark Garduno. Here’s an excerpt:
“We had visited the O’Keeffe museum in Santa Fe maybe two years ago and I had the wondrous epiphany of seeing one of her renderings of an alligator pear: ‘alligator pear, crocagator pear, that’s why they’s so mean.’ Pardon my inability to remember dialogue. But I’ll wager you get the point.”
It’s pretty near impossible to tell whether he’s quoting another source or coining the phrase himself.

The quote is from The Firesign Theatre’s album titled We’re All Bozos on This Bus. It’s an aside in the hall of Presidents as Reagan speaks and the amusement park’s computer begins it’s meltdown at the hands of the Sys Admin.
