He means that it’s not easy being sick and then getting better. And now that he’s gotten better (recovered) it is almost inevitable that he will get sick again sometime in the future and will go through all of that misery all over again. He’s regretting that he got better because he’ll only get sick again. If he had died, he wouldn’t have to worry about being sick anymore. (It’s crude, but Ben Franklin never minced words.)

It has nothing to do with other work that he can or can’t do while he is sick.

I find it really hard to try to explain a Ben Franklin quote when it is out of context…

I will take a guess though, based on what I know of Mr. Franklin’s sense of humor, and say that he wasn’t looking forward to having all life’s little duties and problems thrust on him once again.

Sometimes it’s very relaxing and comfortable to be sick and just be taken care of by some nice person. Makes you not want to get up and be well!

That’s what I think the quote means.

Benjamin Franklin was one of the most humorous and prolific writers I’ve read. This is a tongue in cheek statement which is quite funny. He means that it’s too bad he’s getting better because he’ll have to get back to work doing something he doesn’t really like…but it’s better than the alternative!

I think he meant that in order to use ones intelligence to its fullest potential you need the information and knowledge that comes with a good education. To say that it is like “silver in the mine” is saying that the silver, or the genius, while very valuable, has thus far been untapped. It’s not doing anybody any good. Once silver is mined, that is when the owner can reap the value and benefits. So to with genius, once fed by education, the brain in question can put the gift to good use.

He was somewhat disappointed he was getting well [rather than dying]; now he had to do some disagreeable work [look earlier in the context for what he’s talking about] all over again, some time.
