There is a story in the Aesops fables about a strong trunked willow tree that thought it was the best. There were also reeds growing along the riverbank, that were slender.

When a big wind came, it blew the big tree right over, but the gentle ´bowing down´ of the reeds when the force hit meant that they were unaffected, whereas the willow was up rooted, and not so strong anymore.

This tactic can be applied in many areas of life, male and female.

bending suggests being flexible and dealing with or adapting to a situation and hopefully in so doing, succeeding.

breaking suggests the situation stopping you, breaking you in some way even if only failure in that situation

It’s saying it is better to compromise than stand with the possibility of failure, I’d take exception to this being an absolute

Some things are worth standing firm for, and we are diminished if we don’t.

Depending upon the situation it really means you have to compromise, be flexible otherwise you could lose out altogether and it could break you.

Just give in a little instead of being so stubborn that everything comes against you in a really harsh way.

If something is merely bent, it is not destroyed (usually) however if it is broken it is beyond repair.

better to be resilient than rigid; flexible than hard-nosed.
