If you are clenching your fist (which is usually done as an expression of anger), you cannot shake hands (meaning, approach another person in peace). The bottom line is that dealing with people in a peaceful manner requires you to let go of anger, something Ghandi very much stood for.

A clenched fist is body language for being aggressive, as if you want to punch the person. To HONESTLY shake a hand, you would have to be open to whatever that means, whether it’s a friendship or a business deal.

The intention when shaking a person’s hand is to show a mutual respect and trust. You cannot display this trust and respect with a closed fist on one side. So you can in fact shake a fist but the intention of the shake would be paradoxical. Machiavelli put this theory on paper in the Prince. A tyrant leader would choose fear to rule it’s people, but if the ruler is feared he will be respected but not admired and liked.

It means to shake hands is a sign of peace. If your hand is making a fist its not being peaceful. When you put out your open hand you are showing that you trust the other person. Making a fist is a sign of aggression.

while literaly it would indeed be difficult to shake anybody’s hand with a clenched fist, I believe what is meant is that you can’t make any progress with violence. It’s a saying promoting finding a peaceful end to conflict.
