Usually they say “Give him and inch, and he’ll take a mile.”

Meaning if we give into this small demand, they’ll do whatever they want from there.

Simply put, the speaker is indicating that he or she doesn’t have self control. The speach is referring to a measurment to illustrate that the person will never be happy once they are given something. An example, if you let a child stay up 5 mins longer, they want 10, then 20, then an hour. If you give out free coffee at work , the employees will ask for cream, suger, then danishes, sodas, longer breaks, a new break room, etc.

“Gee Nessa, can I crash on your couch just til tomorrow morning?” By the end of the week, I’ve taken over your household, and you’re on the couch. “Give me an inch, and I’ll take a mile!” That’s a good graphic example. It could pertain to almost anything.

Before there were metric measurements people made up confusing sayings to confuse young people just learning English.

an inch = 2.5 cm

whereas

a mile = 1.6 km

It means “if you give me any opportunity to get something from you, I will take everything I can get – whatever you offer and then some more.”

In everyday situations, it also refers to a person taking advantage of someone else’s generosity.

Well, relate it to money or a cake or something. Would you rather be given the whole cake or a just a slice? Would you rather be given a dollar or try for ten?

We always want MORE, MORE, MORE!!! 🙂

it means when you offer someone something, for example ill give you a finger but youll take the hand, they always want more, never are grateful for what you give them.

It means you shouldn’t give them anything, because they will be ungrateful and take more than they deserve.
