When you are rich you have a lot of materialistic items standing in the way of you being happy. Lots of people think that being rich and owning a lot will make you happy. But it really just gets in the way of the important stuff: family, friends, faith, being a good person. When you are poor you realize having everything is not everything. The poor know it is better to have everything you need and not everything you want. They don’t let materialism stand in the way of being truly happy.

I always understood it as a mix of two things.

1. Be content with the things you have and don’t wish for things you can’t have. A big expensive car for example is nice if you can afford it, but a smaller cheaper car will get you around just as good.

and

2. Being rich doesn’t make you automatically happy. Rich people have sorrows too and just look at how many rich people have drug problems. They don’t seem too happy with their lives even though they have more than enough money.

I think it means that your happiness is more important than money. For example, let’s say you have a job that you really hate but you go to it all day because you want to get rich. Instead, you should spend more time doing something you actually enjoy, even if you don’t end up stinking rich.
