often our past experiences teach us how to deal with the future or proceed w/ the present. think about this… you’ve burned your hand at least 3 times on a hot pot before… now, in the present you stand there staring at a pot on the stove knowing that it’s hot and that if you grab it, it will burn you. henceforth, you don’t grab it with your bare hand anymore, you go get an oven mit. life teaches you valuable lessons everyday and we learn from them, grow from them, and make choices by them. and each time we try something new or a new decision, the result gets logged into our memory and we later recall that to make future decisions.

I think it means that history is a valuable tool for understanding current and future events. You learn from your past and can get an increased understanding of what is happening currently by understanding what has happened in the past.

Maybe you look back because it’s happened before. Since it’s already happened you know what’s going to happen.

In short:

“History REPEATS itself.”

In other words, what we have experiences in our past history, is a good indicator of what will happen again in our futures!

It’s another way of saying history (and our actions, decisions) repeats itself.
