Sorry, I don’t have the book in front of me, but Pip describes how he feels the first time Estella criticizes his appearance (coarse hands, etc.) What he says reveals he never thought anything wrong about himself before, but now since the beautiful Estella has said it, he believes it to be true. This sets off the action for the rest of the book as Pip goes about changing himself to please Estella, dismissing his true nature, and making his life fairly miserable for hundreds of pages.
