It means in you hang around with scuzz you are scuzz. If you hang around with snobs you are a snob. If you hang around with good decent people you are a good decent person.

But in today’s world it’s not a good quote as most of us have a variety of friends.

The best way to determine a man’s (generally speaking a persons) character is through the people they surround themself with. This quote is saying if someone, for example, surrounds themself with kind generous people it is a safe assumption that they too are kind and generous. “Birds of a feather, flock together”

It basically means that if someone associates with people who lack morals or values then that individual is probably the same way. It’s like birds of a feather flock together.

It’s a good indication of someones character by observing their social set and what kinds of people their friends are. It is said ‘watter seeks it’s own level’.

The question seems to have been thoroughly answered, but I’ll add a little to this, just another slant on the issue in th eform of another saying.

“You may best judge a man by seeing who his enemies are.”

I think the two go together.

Rephrased, it means you can tell a man’s character by the character of the people he chooses as friends. They will all be basically the same.

You are judged by the company you keep. Unsavory? Responsible? Choose your friends carefully.

Frankly, it means that if a man has sleazy skanks and nasty friends around him, he is most likely no good. On the otherhand, if he has classy ladies and respectable guys around him, he is most likely good.

(spanish) Dime con quien to andas y te dires quien eres. (Tell me who you hang out with and I will tell you who you are). Birds of a feather flock together. If you hang out with druggies then you are a druggie. If you hang out with professionals then you are a professional. If you hang out with politicians then you should be shot and your guts strung out and . . . oh sorry – scratch that last one. I think you get the idea. Hope this helped.

As older folks would put it, tell me your friends and I’ll tell you who you are.
