Once your get burnt by life you have much more respect for life in general. If you have never been burned you have no way of knowing what can really happen, and therefore still view life as more of a game then an actual challenge.

No one respects the flame quite like the one who’s been badly burned.

Parents may tell a child not to touch the hot stove, but urge to check it out for herself overpowers the child. The child touches the hot stove and gets burned. The parent never has to warn the child of this again – the child learned the lesson on her own.
