If you don’t have young children it is possible. In my early twenties, with no kids I worked about 30 hours a week and took 18 hours.

Later, with kids, I did a hellish semester of working 60 hours a week and taking 6 hours. It darn near killed me plus I missed about 3 months of my son’s life.

Keep in mind that you are supposed to be spending about two to three three times as much times studying outside of class as you are in the classroom, so if you are taking a standard full-time load of 15 hours, you would be studying 30 to 45 hours to do well in school. That brings you to a total of 45 to 60 hours for school (sure, you can get by with less, but you won’t do as well or learn as much). There are 168 hours in a week (7×24). That means that there are more than 100 hours leftover for other activities. If you are a person who needs 8 hours of sleep a night, perhaps an hour to get ready each day, and an hour to eat, that takes up 70 of those hours. That would leave you 38 to 53 hours for everything else, including work, commuting, friends and family, errands, etc. Thus, some people might be able to hold a full-time job, but they would probably have to give up everything else to do so.

Another problem is that you may find that you don’t have complete control of your schedule as a full-time student. Many students are involved in a number of group projects, assigned in their classes. If you run right from class to your job, and your study time is in the middle of the night, your groups will resent you horribly for being unavailable for meetings. While most students have at least part-time jobs, my recommendation would be to see how much your program will require of you before setting your work hours.

Full-time school and full-time work is just about impossible for ordinary mortals.

I teach adults with full-time jobs, but they take only 1-2 classes per term. I had part-time jobs when I was a student, and tha tworked fine. I tried doing both full time, though, and didn’t have enough time to do either very well.

Yes.

I worked my way through college. I worked a full time job and carried a full class load. Needless to say, I did not have much of a social life!

For about six weeks I actually worked 2 full time jobs and carried a full class load – I needed the extra money for books and some lab fees.

Do you mean work full-time and go to school full-time, or work part-time and school full-time?

Plenty of people work part-time while going to school full-time. Some are able to have full-time jobs with odd shifts to accommodate full-time school. Those people, however, usually have only school and work–almost no free time, sometimes no free time at all.
