Back in the day, you would buy beverages in bottles. If you brought the empty bottle back to the store, you could get the deposit back. It was a way for the beverage companies to re-use the bottles. The deposit (from 2-5 cents) was included in the purchase price and refunded upon return.

If you broke the bottle, you could not return it for the deposit. You lose the deposit money.

Charlie is thinking about tough breaks in life are kind of like that broken bottle. Life isn’t fair. Get over it.

Do you mean in its historical context?

It’s a bit like recycling — you return the bottles to the manufacturer so they can be reused, and you get money back for them. But if the bottle’s damaged, it’s not worth anything.
