I dont get this poem…can u please help?

Do not go gentle into that good night,

old age should burn and rave at close of day;

rage, rage against the dying of the light.

though wise men at their end know dark is right,

because their words had forked no lightning they

do not go gentle into that good night.

good men, the last wave by, crying how bright

their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay

rage, rage against the dying of the light.

wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,

and learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,

do not go gentle into that good night.

grave men, near death, who see with blinding sigh

blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gray,

rage, rage against the dying of the light.

and you, my father, there on the sad height,

curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, i pray

do not go gentle into that night.

rage, rage against the dying of the light.

This untitled poem was written for Thomas’s dying father but was never shown to him. It urges him to battle death, to get angry and not give up.He addresses the universality of death in the poem and pleads that although all men must one day die, they must persevere and follow their dreams and passions bravely in the face of impending death. Even when you know that death is inevitable you shouldn’t die without getting angry and giving death a battle and fighting for your life.

I hope this is helpful.

They reviewed this on the movie ‘Dangerous Minds’. Basically it’s talking about death saying dont give up without a fight(“rage, rage against the dying of the light”). I hope that helps some.

Poetry is so subjective. I have heard people say this poem is about fighting against death- real death. But I see it as a poem about fighting against the death of one’s spirit.

The difficult thing here is trying to tell someone what a poem means. There is no way someone can tell you exactly what this poem means because poems are supposed to mean whatever you personally feel they do.

One must fight death, as death is the end of the spirit. And one must not let his spirit go.

This is Dylan Thomas’ most famous poem. I don’t see what there is here not to get, unless you didn’t read it. Can you explain what you don’t understand?
