It depends on the state but a starting teacher makes between $25,000 and $40,000 depending on the state you are in. A beginning college professor at a two year college seldem starts full time so that is a hard one to answer but at a 4 year college the pay is very dependent on the prestige and size of the college you are teaching at. You could make between $30,000 and $60,000 as a starting teacher. If you have a lucrative specialty, such as cardiovascular research, it can go up from there.

The question should be, do teachers get paid enough for what they do? (The answer to that question is no!)

Anyway, under No Child Left Behind, in order to teach you have to pass a Praxis Test (expect for in MA, they have their own test) and complete a certification program. A Major in Math, without a teaching certification will normally only allow someone to become a long-term substitute (as little as $60 a day to as much as $120 a day depending on state, district, and need). If you have a Major in Math and Education and are certified you can make as little as $20,000 a year to $39,000 a year to start…typically increasing with each year of service.

A Masters in Math will allow you to teach at the Community College level – salaries differing from state to state and need.

PhD. in math will allow you to teach at the University or college level. Again, pay is based on number of classes. Also, most colleges want their professors to be published in educational journals or have written text books.

It all depends on where you are teaching. Some districts start in the $20k range where others could start you off in the upper $30k area. The more education you have, the higher your salary. I wouldn’t suggest getting a doctorate then a job…it will be hard to find a district to sign you on if they have to start paying you a lot of money. A master’s is ok though.

In my school district, the average teacher salary for elementary or high school is over $50,000. Yes, the jobs are highly competitive, and many of the teachers have masters or doctorates.

Knowing a few teachers at a local community college in the middle of Kansas, they are actually better off working at a convenience store. They’d make more money. Sad, I’d say.
