You will have 2 equations:

1st equation: n means “nickel” and “q” means quarter. the 52 represents the total number of nickels and coins in that equation.

therefore, n + q = 52

2nd equation: 5n + 25q = 800

In the 2nd equation, 5 n represents the value of the nickel. 25 q represents the value of quarters. The 800 signifies the number of cents ($ 8 x 100 = 800 cents) since the nickel and quarters are already in cents.

then writing the equations down:

1st Equation: n + q = 52

2nd Equation: 5n + 25q = 800

Then substitute Equation 1 into Equation 2.

Let’s first solve equation 1 in form of just “n”

n+q=52 is the same as n=52-q

Then substitute n’s value into Equation 2 to solve “q”

5 (52-q) + 25 q = 800

260 – 5q + 25q =800

20q=540

q=27

Therefore we have 27 quarters

Then take the total number of coins i.e. 52 – 27 quarters = 25 nickels.

Therefore, there are 27 quarters and 25 nickels in the jar with the total value of $8

Hope this helps 🙂

25 nickles 25 x 0.5 = 1.25

27 quarters 27 x 0.25 = 6.75

1.25 + 6.75 = 8.00
