grammar help!?

What would be the proper way to quote a book that has quotes in the sentence. Here is what I am trying to quote:

“Hey, hey, you girls, no more fighting!” said my father, as if Waverly and I were still children arguing over tricycles.

I wasn’t sure how to quote the father while I was quoting the book.

To quote from the book (the entire portion you wrote) place ” on the beginning and ” on the end. To quote the portion the father says put ‘ at the beginnning and ‘ at the end so it should look like this….

“‘Hey, hey, you girls, no more fighting!’ said my father, as if Waverly and I were still children arguing over tricycles.”

you always start and end a quote with quotations. that look like this ”

when there is a quote inside a quote, you use what looks like an apostrophe or half of a quotation mark. it looks like this ‘

So if I were writing about your quote it would look like this:

In this quote from the story, the narrator uses a metaphor relating older girls to children. “‘Hey, hey, you girls, no more fighting!’ said my father, as if Waverly and I were still children arguing over tricycles.”
