can someone explain this quote ?

“It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker, that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own self-interest. We address ourselves, not to their humanity but to their self-love, and never talk to them of our own neccessities but of their advantages.”-Adam Smith

The people who sell us our food don’t do it for our sake (to please us) but for their own sake (to make a living).

However, their work is still of benefit to us, even though that was not their reason for doing it. They feed our hunger and we feed theirs.

It means your need/loss is someone else’s gain. It may also mean that people are very cynical about the kindess of others, they believe that no one will do anything for free and so they need to be bribed by some sort of benefit. This is how the world goes round- money.
