Worried about grades. Going into 9th grade?

Back in 8th grade I was getting all As and Bs.

Here’s what I need help with:

– In math last year, I sometimes got bad grades because I didn’t understand things. I have a problem with zoning out in class and asking for help. I’ll be taking Algebra 1 this year.

– In science I got Cs and Bs because I can’t find anything interesting about it. It’s so hard too. I’ll be taking Physics this year.

– Social Studies was fine. I’m taking American History this year. The bad part is I hear a lot of freshman fail with the teacher I have because he’s SO BORING. Plus, it’s American History. I’ve been learning that forever, so it’s going to be dull.

– I did okay in English. I’m not very good with writing essays and I can’t find any help. I sometimes got okay grades on essays because they were so simple but I know they will be harder in high school. I’ll be taking English 1 this year.

Could you please give as much advice as you can so that I can improv in these areas. I really want to get all As

Getting good grades in high school is all about getting into good study habits. If you spend an hour or two each day reviewing the each class and doing homework, youll be golden. It seems like your biggest problem is concentration in class. If the class is boring, you’re going to have to just suck it up and listen. Cant get good grades if you zone out during class.

As for taking good notes, just be careful to write down everything you deem is important. Main ideas and functions. Who, what, where, why, how, in history. Dont write everything down or you’ll just overwhelm yourself.

Take it from me (a high school senior w/ all A’s)- if you develop the right study habits and listen to your classes, you’ll breeze through high school.

Awwwwww what you don’t realize, is that you are psyching yourself out!! It is really not that bad!! I just finished grade 9 and it was so much fun! A lot of people changed this year and I became closer with people who I never would have thought of beccoming good friends with. I have never had a problem with making new friends, and I have been in and out of different groups constantly. I’ve always been an well lets say and hounorary member of the popular group. Bu to tell you the truth, my grade doesn’t really have a popular group. We are all nice to each other. Anyways. What I have learned is that being in groups isn’t worth it. You eliminate yourself from letting people get to know you. If you have fun with your friends that’s all that matters!! As for the boys, who cares!!! Hunny I’ve never a had like a “real” boyfriend before, and I’m still okay. There are PLENTY of guys for you out there! If you go in there and pretend to have confidence even if you are totally freaked out, nobody will even notice how scared you are!! Trust me, I do it all the time, and it works!! Don’t call yourself pathetic becasue you are not at all!! Many people have this question,………………even the popular kids lol!! Have a blast in grade 9 and you will be fine!!! I hope that helped a bit! πŸ™‚ xo

Don’t worry! You are WAY ahead of the game because you recognize your shortcomings and want to address them. Several of your problems stem from “maturity” issues, specifically the ones where the excuse is “I’m bored” or “it’s not interesting”. Those are the ones that you have to really commit yourself to if you want to achieve your goal of getting into a good college with a 4.0! (By the way – I am 35 and STILL struggle with things that I think are boring – its not an age thing!)

The other issues are going to be easier for you to address. You need extra help in developing study skills and note taking. There are classes and workshops that will help you learn what to do. Go to your parents, call your guidance counselor, or call your local community college for information on where to go to get the skills you need. If you do you will really be ahead of the curve. Bad study skills and note taking is one of the main reason students struggle, its also one that is easy to fix.

Good luck – you sound like a really good kid!

being a freshman isn’t something that’s hard to get used to… remember, it’s only 1 grade up, the only difference is that you’re going to be in classes with people in other grades too…

You may think it’s hard at first, but thats because you’re expecting it to be…

I ‘d say you start taking notes because I know a lot of teachers push that in my school, if you arn’t able to write stuff down fast enough ask for the notes from some one in your class…

I’m not one to take notes… or even look at them after I do, so I really don’t have any good tips other then learn to abbreviate (sp?)

and don’t worry about seniors, they’re not all stuck up and annoying… atleast I’m not

and no teacher will refuse when you ask for help…

Number 1 thing you have a problem with is not asking questions in math! math can be hard and not asking questions just makes it harder. dont be embarassed to ask ?’s because some1 else probably has the same ? and is to afraid to ask it. but, if you’re to afraid, talk to ur teacher after class or email them if you don’t know how to do the homework right or can’t figure out how to do something. another thing, do your hw as soon as you get home, get it over with and dont procrastinate that way you have the rest of the night to do what you want and you wont feel guilty! just do your best!

You can’t get all A’s just because you WANT them.

Being good at studying isn’t a natural talen for most, it’s a sign of DEDICATION and that you’ve made a CHOICE to study.

It seems to me that you’re looking for an excuse to fail by saying things like ‘this class is boring’

It’s all about the effort you put into things. If you REALLY think it’s important, than you’ll do whatever it takes to succeed.

Call the school and ask if they have an AVID program. AVID helps kids learn how to take notes, etc that have the ability and mindset that they are going to college.

To enroll, you probably have to fill out an information sheet and get your parent to sign off..but it’s worth it

If they have it, repost and ask what other people did in AVID classes…from taking college tours, note taking lessons, notebook organization and checks (you have to get a grade somehow πŸ™‚ ) to career exploration and planning…it’s all part of it. Once you get that list…butter mom up with it and you know that’s a parent’s dream πŸ™‚

Hmm…

Try harder?

Do better?

Work more?

Maybe try to create a personal connection to what’s being said up front, so it’s more interesting. Like, oh, that’s kinda like… so on.

And for Math, maybe get a tutor, or go in to the teacher for some help. Usually with math, it just takes one pointer or something to make it all click.

Maybe for English, try a topic that really interests you and that you have alot to say about. Or take the topic at hand and make it relevant to you, and try to really connect and understand the topic, and let the words flow. Good luck!
