Should I take AP Music Theory if I have absolutely no knowledge of reading music?

No,

AP music theory deals with the study of music cord progressions, extensions and notations. You will spend a lot of time struggling with the notation and won’t be able to grasp the concepts such as first and second inversions, neopolitan sixth chords and I,IV, V7 I progressions.

The previous poster is incorrect. This is not beginning theory for high school students. It is an AP class. It is intended to be at the college level.

If your interested in majoring in music it is not likely you will need AP Calculus, but taking AP music theory would certainly help you get into competitive music programs. If your looking at a college specializing in music education than you definitely need the AP theory course. On the Berklee College of Music web site it specifies “We expect you to have knowledge of written music fundamentals” as one of the requirements for entry. Plus you are more likely to do well in the class of a subject you love than one you hate. I never took calculus and was accepted to some pretty competitive schools. Having been out of college for 10 years, I can tell you that there has not been anything I couldn’t do because I didn’t take calculus. Follow your bliss.
