What do you think should be taught in schools that isn’t?

They have to know all the basics by the time they get to grade school, but by the time they get to high school they should be taught other skills they need to know in order to get out on there own. They do not teach kids how to interview for a job write a worth while resume. How to balance their personal finaces. How to rent an apartment, file their taxes, and other basic need to know things inorder to live out in the real world and parents do not have time to teach the children these things anymore. So how are kids suposed to know what they need to know to survive in this world? What do you think they should be learning in school that they aren’t?

Self-respect, manners, general skills, taxes, general real world skills, and all the other extras that people have to learn to run a household and take care of themselves.

Foreign language should be a priority beginning in K.

Also financial responsibility, although that would mean more control over TV and sponsors.

Since it takes a village to raise a child, it shouldn’t just be up to the school.

You said,”parents do not have time to teach the children these things anymore”, how come?? Are they too busy doing other things?? This is the exact reason I have pulled my child out of public school and started home schooling.

If a parent does not have the time to properly teach their child life skills then they shouldn’t be parents to begin with.

I learned how to manage my finances on my own, figured out how to rent an apartment on my own, how to manage my apartment, how to write a resume, how to interview, and so forth. Although I have a slightly distant father, he always took the time to tell me what I needed to know.

Schools should teach some skills but I do not believe it is their responsibility to teach everything.

We are in the digital dawn..it’s time to really look at what’s needed. I believe because computers are a dominate factor in all our lives..it’s time to teach our kids what is taught in the trade schools…it’s necessary to get them up to speed to achieve a life other than welfare. As suggested previously basic life teaching need to be done..budgeting, taxes, finance..some schools cover it but it needs to be mandatory.

Several years ago I heard that a school in Chicago was teaching kids how to fill out welfare paper work..is that what we want for our kids..I think not.

We always want better for our kids but also at the same time don’t want to spoil them. It’s hard I know..trust me I know.

Now it’s “there is no money for schools” how long has that been going on? Too long I say. It’s time to really put a cap on school district spending..from teacher pay to the type paper they use…some will say that’s not fair to people who spend thousands to become a teacher..well here’s my answer..teacher pay is better than most jobs..you suppossedly took that career to help kids to teach and nuture the kids to become productive adults….to be a teacher is not the best way to become rich..if that’s what you are looking for..then..you need to go elsewhere…there are so many tax breaks and incentives for teachers it’s amazing they complain at all about pay…they knew what it payed when they went in and that’s that.

I wish I could be a teacher..But I can’t…But I see and talk to kids all the time..I tell them it’s fun now..enjoy it because reality will hit you in the face so hard you are going to wonder what happened.

If you kids don’t believe me..you can almost ask any adult..and they will tell you ….they wish that the only problems they had were how to dress and homework.

Well, where I live, my Consumer Math class teaches about loans, taxes, interest rates, etc., though Consumer Math isn’t mandatory (Need to take either Pre-Cal, Consumer or Applied Math).

My Word Processing class went over how to compose research essays, business letters, memos, etc.

Though these classes aren’t mandatory in my school, they are offered. It’s up to the student to take the class that may help them in the future.

If parents don’t have the time anymore, they need to find it. Schools can’t teach everything; there’s only so many hours in a day. Parents still need to teach their children themselves, whether they like it or not.

Technically, the arts are already taught in schools, but they’re something that’s not emphasized enough. The arts get overlooked when funding is assigned, and some schools don’t have any arts programs at all. Considering that there’s a number of studies that show that arts students get higher grades and higher scores on standardized tests, the arts seem fairly important.

But that’s just my opinion!

Table Manners.

I interview people for a living, and I am surprised at how many adults don’t have basic table manners. They double dip in the olive oil, don’t put their napkins in their laps, chew with their mouths open, etc.
