I don’t think it was harder, but things seemed a lot simpler then. Technology was very different than today, the most like a computer gadget I had was Atari. Things moved slower and we had less distractions from studying, no internet, no cell phones, no cable tv until 1980. All the knowledge you were supossed to get was from books or talking to people. Today you have more resources to form your opinions and learn from. So it’s not harder, there’s just more things to consider now because we have more access to information.

School is much harder today. In the 70s kindergarten was more for socializing, now they even have standards and learning mandates. This continues up through the grades. Children are expected to learn more in less time than in the 70s. There is more pressure on the students because of increased testing and other measures to hold educators accountable for student learning. In the 70s, the show “Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader” wouldn’t have been a challenge.

It wasn’t harder, just different.

English and Maths were focussed on more intensively, but students today get a more rounded education. They study more subjects, and the trade-off has been less time on each subject.
