Student rights?

My daughter who has never been sent to the office or in any trouble got into an argument with another student in class. The teachers aid called the office but the principal and superintendent was not in. The next morning the principal tells her 1st hour class that my daughter and the other student will be called to the office that day. Is this a violation of my daughters rights with the whole school knowing she is going to the office? And yes the whole school did know because it is a very small school

Thanks

No, it sounds like an example was made. I’m not saying I agree with what they did, but especially at the beginning of a new school year administrators tend to do a few things to reinforce expectations for student behavior. Student rights on a school campus are very limited. I would see it as more of an issue if the principal was discussing their consequences with other students. It sounds like they wanted students to know that the arguing would be dealt with. Bad things happen on a campus when expectations are not clear and discipline consequences are not followed through on.

This action seems to be within the guidelines of most small schools. There is no violation of rights, student or otherwise.

Especially if your daughter had never had any prior disciplinary action, the news (in a small school) would be all over the community anyway. Such is typical in our society.

More importantly is to make sure that whatever happens, that you let your daughter know that you are “on her side” even if she is at fault. Make sure that she is treated fairly and with justice by the school system, but allow them to do their jobs first. If you have problems with the process, then lodge your complaint.
