Star this if you think this is rediculous!?

ok, so my friend e-mailed me asking me if i could help her with her sister’s 2nd grade math homework question because no one in her family could get it. I said sure, and I still don’t know the answer. If you know it, you can tell the answer, but don’t you think this is rediculously hard for a secong grade question:

Sharon has 32 mini erasers. she gave 18% of them to her friend, but her friend rejected 3. Her other friend asked for 2. How many erasers does sharon have left?

Yes, it certainly seems hard for 2nd grade. 18% of 32 is not an even number (it works out to be 5.76 erasers), so it seems impossible. If it is based on estimation, she would have 27 left, since the first friend gave three back but kept 3 (5.76 would be rounded to 6) and the second friend kept 2.

Are you certain the 18 wasn’t meant to be just the numeral 18, not 18%?

gosh! this is a 2nd grade Qs?????? WOW

anyway this is how u do it…

100% = 32 erasers

18% = ?

so wen u multiply 18 X 32 and then divide the answer by 100 you would get 5.76

So if the friend rejected 3 you would be left with 2.76…and wen she gives 2 for the other friend she is left out with 0.76 eraser (which i am guessing is the last 0.25% broken or used eraser) lol..anyway thats ridiculus that they expect a 2nd grader to figure this out!!!

This is crazy. I see no point in giving this problem to a second grader! However, I know the answer!!!

Multiply 32 by .18, because 18% is the same as .18 and 18/100. Add three more after you’ve done that, and then subtract 2. (So really, instead of adding three and then subtracting two, you could just add one.)

I learned how to do this stuff in the sixth grade…

Yeah, that’s really hard. I used a calculater, hehe. I don’t know if this is right though. I came up with 26.24. Unless an eraser crumbled or something, the first girl took one eraser and only a fraction of the second one.

Could it simply be that a lot of people find the question interesting? I never saw anyone get 300 stars of interest. Sounds kinda fishy, doesn’t it?

Ridiculous is right! The teacher is freelancing without regard for syllabus/curriculum. If this continues, it should, for the sake of her students, be brought to the attention of her principal.

Wow. I can’t answer that and I graduated high school! You must be joking. They asked that to a SECOND grader? Not cool, and yes, ridiculous.
