Should students wear uniforms, or is it okay to have this competition to see who dresses better?

My younger sisters and I both agree that, popularity at our schools are based on clothing. But why? The school board is thinking of uniforms so no one will be singled out in the clothing thing. But, should they enforce us to wear uniforms?

I like the idea of uniforms…Now i know there are goin to be people that will rate this as a negative, but i don’t care.

So much time , effort and money are put into school clothes. Is there anybody that remembers it’s school not a fashion statement?

Ok so i’m a parent with both my kids in school ( one in 5th and the other in 3rd) . They both wear uniforms until they graduate in the 12th grade. I think that the uniforms are cheaper to buy than the $50 jean or the $30 shirt.

I buy my kids their uniforms and shirts and their black sneakers and it is sooo much cheaper, and the kids are all the same. No preppies, or sporties judging the way they look.

That’s my opinion and i’m sticking to it.

And yes , if i was made to wear uniforms when i was in school, i wouldn’t have been against it.

There’s no real easy answer to this question. The problem is, that many of the problems with free dress that we hear about so often are occasionally true. People do judge others by their appearances, and that causes problems with popularity, self-esteem, and can lead to some serious results down the road. On the other hand, uniforms do put a restriction on expression and being your self. Personally, I think the best answer to the question is somewhere in the middle. For example, having a basic uniform set up, like a collared shirt, dress pants, and a belt. However, students could be allowed to choose the colors, the brands and that sort of thing. That way, they can stand out if they want to, and they can blend in if they want to.

since I’ve been to schools where uniforms were mandatory mad to schools where there were no uniforms. i didn’t find any good reasons why students should wear uniforms. people show their interests and personality through their appearance. wearing a uniform is like wearing a mask. also wearing a uniform doesn’t automatically turn you into a genius. and about the competition in dress ups, since i am from a place where there is no big hush about fashion, people don’t really care what you wear. its a steady environment. i think its all fueled up by the media giving attention to the stars. i don’t see any harm in a little competition unless it is outrageous and it gets out of hand. in a place where fashion has a great influence and people try to buy clothes beyond their limitation, it is better to have a proper uniform, which everyone can afford.

There is a big difference between uniforms and dress code. Uniforms don’t work very well because although people may be dressing the same, they don’t look the same. As someone with an unusual body shape, when I had to wear uniforms everyone picked on me because I looked like a big blob. When everyone is dressed exactly the same, people move onto things like how good you look in them instead of how expensive your clothes are.

I think a dress code would be fine because it allows for expression but it will be harder for students to pick on others because it won’t be as obvious what brand they are wearing.

Uniforms aren’t going to solve the problem until everyone in the school has graduated or left. Its not like uniforms will come in and everyone will forget who is poor. Kids will ALWAYS find ways to pick on others, and there are a lot worse things you can tease someone about. At least clothes are completely vain and mean nothing, but they might start to tease about personality issues, or other things that will hurt kids much more than what is going on now.

There are a lot more issues to this than if it is wrong to take away freedom of expression. Just because its annoying and very few people like it doesn’t mean that its bad, but you need to take a look at what the real problem is. The real problem at this school is not that there is inequality in how people dress, so changing over to uniforms will solve nothing.

As a parent of a 5 year old. I believe uniforms are best. The students act better when they have to dress up a bit more and the battle of “cool clothes” is a non-issue. I believe all students from K-8 should have to wear uniforms. High school maybe not. In many other countries (such a the caribbean) it is mandatory from birth through graduation. It cuts down on the money parents must spend each year and behavior is better. Individualism is better when a background of discipline and self esteem is established at an early age. Uniforms help build up others areas of worth without distracting the class and money status in the forefront.

Although I’m not sure about your particular situation, I do know that uniforms can be a wonderful opportunity. I work at an inner-city, very low income elementary/middle school. Many of the student’s families can not afford to buy their children used clothes, let alone stylish ones. Being that uniforms are paid for in the beginning of the year, and last throughout the year, it is a financial relief for the families. They only have to walk to the laundry mat once a week with less clothes (they get two sets of normal day clothes, and one set of gym clothes), they don’t have to fight over what their children are wearing to school, and the students actually feel proud to wear their uniforms (not all of them, but most feel it identifies them with their school). For people who claim that uniforms take away freedom, there is always Saturday, Sunday, and the whole summer to show your personal style. Sometimes the focus in schools is clothes, instead of learning. Uniforms, in my school at least, helps the students focus on their work instead of talking about what this girl is wearing and how that guys shoes are cool.

Granted I was able to wear what I wanted but I honestly think schools should enforce students to wear uniforms. My reason is because so many girls wear clothes that seem very inappropriate for the school setting. I would rather be dressed the same as all the other girls compared to seeing the butt crack when they sit down or bend over. Now an idea is once a week let the student pick that day they are allowed to wear what they want so long as it meets school regulations.

I’ve been going to private-Catholic school my whole life, since i was in kindergarten. Now I’m going to be a senior in high school this year, and I’ve realized how much a hassle it is for us to wear uniforms. I attend an all girls Catholic high school, in which uniforms may been seen as something to prevent problems between the girls. But honestly, uniforms are more of a hassle and to me cost more money for my parents. Part of the underclassmen uniform is a blazer that we are required to wear during the winter. The blazer costs about $150, and it isn’t even a durable, quality piece of clothing. We are allowed to have dress down days, but even in my school, our dress down days have rules and restrictions. When I was little, the uniforms never bothered me. But since maybe 9th grade, I thought that having a uniform was kind of caging us in from seeing how individual everyone is. Of course you can’t get to know someone just by the clothes they wear, but it’s an important part of expression and I think that we should have the freedom to wear whatever clothes we wish. And it’s not just attire that is a uniform in my school, but certain hairstyles, hair colors, and piercings are tagged “inappropriate.” To me it’s unfair to us, because even when we all look the same with our uniforms, there are still problems between people in the schools no matter what.

Okay i have worn many different school uniforms and i was picked on more when i was wearing a uniform than when we had casual dress because you can still tell who is rich or poor especially if you live in a little there isnt a big selection and especially if you are bigger than most ppl or smaller than its harder to find uniforms unless provide the uniforms which most dont and why should you have to buy a ton of more clothes that kids wont wear outside of school because the SCHOOL said so and you have to wear certain types of shoes most the time and half the time i wore uniform they were wierd shoes that didnt fit rite….and yea thats what i have to say…..AND you can wear the latest fashion if you just kno wear to shop for less prices especially if you shop online!!!!!!!!!!

Uniforms are the win. People are always complaining that they take away freedom of speech, or depleat creativity. WRONG. That’s just an excuse people use when they can no longer dress like pimps and whores. Yes, people are classified most often by the way they dress, which is why the girls who dress the slutiest are the ones who are most popular among the boys. Uniforms are great, though unfortunately I’ve never had the chance to wear them, which means I know what I’m talking about when it comes to this social clique business and such. There are other ways to express yourself, even when you wear a uniform. Creativity isn’t something that’s restricted to whose skirt is shorter or whose top is skimpier. It’s all down to your imagination. SO USE IT. Uniforms win! End of ramble.
