My school is thinking about a Mandatory Study Hall and Sunday School!? What should I do!? Is it legal?

I go to a Catholic School. We go currently from 7:40 – 3:35.

Well my school is thinking of making huge changes. First, a mandatory study hall is being considered. That means that we’d be forced to stay at school longer and do our homework, in silence! If this goes through, The day would be from 7:15 – 4:45.

They are also thinking of making a mandatory Sunday School too. If this went through they would add an all school Mass at 1:00 PM on Sunday, and we’d have to come in our uniforms. Then after that, we’d go to school to reflect on the lesson and learn other Religion things until like 3:30!

Can they do this?

the school can do this if it is a private school. Any state funded public school would have to abide by the separation of church and state rules but private schools operate differently

If it was a public school, heck no. But since you attend a private school, it is legal as they can make up their own curriculum. They have the power to do whatever they want in order to try and improve the school’s curriculum. Besides, don’t worry, Study Hall will probably be more beneficial that it first might appear. Think of it as a way to do homework IN SCHOOL and not have to worry about it later at home so you have time to do the stuff you actually enjoy. Plus, there are teachers around I bet and can help you with homework, something you can’t do if you’re doing it at home. And about the Sunday School, well it is a Catholic School and it is only good that you are learning more about Our Lord. But still, since they are still

“thinking” about it, that means it still isn’t official so don’t worry yet. Besides, I’m pretty sure they have to get it through the school board, your teachers/nuns, and I’m pretty sure parents will also have a say in this if your school is actually considering to do this. (Basically, if you don’t like it, you can ask your parents to protest it!) Hope this helps! 😀
