My daughter is going to?

My daughter is going to kindergarden should I send her to a great K-12 school, that I would have to get financial aid for. Or should I send her to a good public school?

I wish there was a clear cut answer to that question. I think you have to look at the pros and cons of each option. Does the marginal benefit of sending your daughter to (I’m assuming) a private school outweigh the marginal cost of incurring the financial aid? Or vice versa? Another variable is the quality of the public school, what can she get at that private school that she can’t get at a public school. Also, as crappy as this sounds, maybe you would want to save your money for her higher education like high school and college. I don’t really know your financial situation.

I can tell you that on a personal level, I went to public school from K-8 and then a private High School then on to a private college and I believe that it worked out well for me. It gave me the best of both worlds and, I believe, it made me a better person. As long as she gets a good education and is successful in life, that’s what matters and you can rest assured that you made the right decision.

Go to the schools under consideration and talk to the administration about the curriculum and goals for kindergarten. (and each year thereafter) Will the curriculum and goals challenge your daughter, or does she already know everything that they hope to teach in kindergarten? Either way, is this what you want for your daughter?

When we asked these questions at the public school, it was obvious that the totally unprepared students were brought up to a minimum level of performance while the “average” students were taught to sit quietly and do nothing, so as not to disrupt the class.

Depends on the location of the schools. If you’re sending her to a religious/parochial school she’d probably get a good education in a good environment. So its good to think about the pros and cons about both schools. Like if your daughter needs special education, like help in reading or speech, public may have more to offer than the more expensive one. but that all depends on the type of school, what it has to offer. The questions you can think of are- what kind of surroundings do i want her to grow up in?why? what do i want her to be prepared for in the future? would putting her in the “great” school be well worth the money? How?

It depends on where you live, and how good the public school system is. In Ca, I’d say private school all the way.

When I was in school, long ago, I was going to be bussed (that was when they took an all white school, and bussed 1/2 the kids to an all black school, and vise versa) anyway, I had already been bussed for 2 yrs and said enough, so I went to a private school in 7th and 8th grade, loved it. My dad put me back in public school in the 9th grade… 8th grade, all A’s – 9th grade B’s and C’s, 10th grade D’s, 11th grade, dropped out.

I would say Public School, but make sure its one in a good area.

Only because kids get fed up going to a private school through out all of grade school, especially the same one for all those years.

the public school option would depend on your local district – but in general public schools are just a good as most private schools. the big exception would be ones that are in low income urban areas.

Public schools aren’t cutting it any more. Make sure that she gets a good school. Then you have to give her lots of support, like being personally involved with her homework, making sure she’s doing it. encouraging her to keep at it, etc.

I would think that would depend on the quality of the public school and your ability to afford twelve years of paying plus paying for college.
