Kind of embarrassing, little advice please?

How can I educate myself at home without going to College? I didn’t get a very good education when I was in high school, and would like to teach myself. My weak subjects are Math and Reading and Writing. I’m not a very good Speller or am I very good at any type of mathematical problem. Serious answers please! My self esteem is already crushed enough.

You should go to college and take developmental classes. They would help you alot. If that’s not possible. I would suggest perhaps playing games online that consist of those subjects.

Hi – I teach at a 2 year branch campus that offers complete associates degrees on-line, plus many developmental courses that bring students up to college level, when they are not already there. I know there are lots of other places out there that offer similar things, but our institution is quite affordable; well, especially if you’re in state (NM). I teach Art Appreciation and Art History on line, but developmental classes in reading, writing and math offered on-line also. If this sounds like what you’re looking for, let me know if the web site listed doesn’t answer all questions, and I’d be happy to explain more specifics, or connect you with someone else who could answer more questions. This institution is particularly good with folks whose self-esteem has been crushed by judgmental and unfriendly forces out there – you are not alone.

If you feel slightly dificient from yyour high school education I would contact your local adult basic ed service and ask them for some take home materials in those areas. They can give you workbooks and/or the material that you would use to study for the GED. You can use these free tools to brush up on the subjects you feel lacking in and then I would suggest you try taking an online course or two, maybe at your local community college. I have found that they are awesome, you do the work more at your own pace and its all at home on your computer! Good Luck

Hello,

Good for you wanting to improve yourself.

Try reading every day, and invest in a good dictionary, any words you don`t understand look up and make a note of them.

If you have a good friend who will help you, try writing a short story and get them to check it over for you and correct any spelling mistakes.

Every time you go shopping make a note of the prices and see if you can add them up before you get to the till.

My friend had problems with reading and writing and maths and she started night classes, shes now training to be a classroom assistant.

I wish you the lots of luck, let me know how you get on.

All the best.

Helen.

Well – you’re starting in the right place.

There are lots of good places on the internet to get some basics down and then maybe check into a community college. Your self-esteem may be making you wary of trying to go back to school, but you’re actually adding additional pressure by making yourself both teacher and student – I think you’d be surprised how supportive others might be if you make the committment to better yourself.

Here’s a couple examples of on-line courses:

Get some books on improving those areas. To improve reading, read a few good books that you believe will challenge you at the level you’re at. To improve writing, start a blog and dedicate about 30 minutes a day to writing in it. To improve math, I’d suggest getting a few texts and trying to figure out the complexities yourself.

Good luck!

A really good way to improve your reading skill that I would highly recommend is to start off by raeading books aimed at young adults, especially any books that have won the newberry award. They are not only great stories, but are terrific vocabulary builders and are often used in colleges for students (like my own mom) who are learning english or trying to develop their writing skills.

there are a ton of web sites whereby one can learn to do the basic skills learned in HS. I spend all my spare t ime studying various sites on the net. Got my EMT, Electrical, NICET and other certifications by reading and studying and taking practice tests on the net. It is agreat source. One word of advice, the PORN freaks know all the angles, misspellings and other errors to get you to their site. For eg, was looking up somthing for Acts of the APostles. WOW what a surprise. Good luck. KIDOS for you for wanting to expand your horizions!!!
