Even though a GED is touted as the equivalent to a high school diploma it is not. Why would anyone think that one test given to a high school dropout where in most states the ability to take retake the test is unlimited is as good as a four year education.

Studies have shown that those who have received an equivalency diploma only do very slightly better than school dropouts. They frequently measure the earnings of each group based on educational level and as a group equivalency diploma holders do very poorly.

If you have a choice go for the regular diploma. It wins hands down.

Yes, you can get into a college with an equivalency diploma. You can also get into a college without any diploma. Look carefully at college catalogs and you will see that most do not mention a high school diploma as a requirement for admission.

That said, admission to a college even if it is obtained is only a beginning. If the new student does not have a good academic background, does not have the study skills and cannot stick to a prescribed program the chances of continuing in school and successfully receiving a diploma is very much against him.

I know that this is not what you want to here but this has been my experience as a high school teacher, guidance counselor, assistant principal, principal and professor of education.
