My mom is a 6th grade math teacher and she needs some good “icebreaker” exercises to get all her students comfortable with her and with each .other

One thing that I do on the first day of school is to give all my students a page with some basic questions (When is your birthday? What are your hobbies? Favorite movie? TV show? School Subject? What extra-curricular activities are you in? How do you learn best? etc. ) The last question I put is “Is there anything else I should know about you?” The answers you get to these questions help you get to know the kids better, but it doesn’t force them to speak in front of the class on the first day (and since just about everyone has a fear of public speaking, I don’t want to start the year by making them do it) Before I give them the list, I answer the questions so they get to know a little about me. I have had kids write things on these forms like: that both of their parents died in a car accident and they live with an older brother; one said she was in foster care; another said she was diabetic and might have to leave class to get a snack.

Another thing that you can do (yes, I know it’s corny, but it works) is to have each student think of an adjective that describes them that starts with the same letter as their first name and introduce themselves. After each one introduces themself, the teacher starts back at the beginning and lists each student who has already been introduced. You will know their names in no time.

Well she may not need an icebreaker. But she needs to give some info about herself. The kids will get to know her better and understand why she does some things she does. And maybe she should go around the class asking about the students. It breaks they ice enough to where they are not afraid to ask questions.

kids love to be treated like young adults

its true this year my english teacher did that and it was awesome and he cursed and made jokes and it was fun and ALOT of people in my class matured

tell her not to make the class too boring make fun math activities for the kids to do since they are in 6th grade they need time to get to know each other so they should do group work

I would have them all write for 15 minutes about what they want to be when they grow up and what do they like to do now. Then get into a circle and read them to the class.

icebreakers are not necessary…they are so awkward….

she is the teacher, the kids are her students…no ice breaker required. 6th grade is middle school – kids have to learn to grow up

I used to like the 5 minute freewriting exercise our math teacher had us do. Just a few sentences about whatever we wanted, poetry, prose, math related, questions, whatever. We could then either share, or not as we wanted to. We did this every day before class. It helped ease the transition from “day to day” things to “class” mode.

Yo Barbie like your mom is da bomb she should actually just try and have them go around the class saying their name (First and last) and then saying something interesting about them.
