All butterflies have SIX legs and feet – 3 pairs of jointed legs, 4 long and 2 short. In some species such as the monarch, the front pair of legs remains tucked up under the body most of the time, and are difficult to see.

All insects have 6 legs, and the butterfly is and insect. If something has 8 legs, it is called an arachnid.

HOW does it have six legs???

Hmm. Well the legs grew on it while it was a pupa.

If the question was actually WHY, I would say because it is an insect.

There are 3 legs on one side of the body and 3 on the other.
