The first thing that you should do is to abandon any attempt to get a 3.0. Instead, go for the 4.0. Never aim for anything other than the best. If you miss that by a little, you are in the 3’s. If you miss 3.0 by a little, you are in the 2’s.

The next thing to do is to pay attention to the teacher, especially when hints are given. If the teacher tells you that (s)he frequently makes tests out of the “Do Now” (or Problem of the Day) work at the beginning of the class, then believe that teacher and be able to repeat each of those problems, especially those within 2-3 days of a test or quiz. Those who socialize at the start or show up late lose out while those who pay attention benefit. I do that with my students and I remind them that I do it after each test. I also tell them how many of the problems were in that category over the previous few days. In one case, it was 18 out of the 20 questions. And the same ones ignore that, come the next quiz or test.

If the teacher has a “special, few-minute review” just before an examination, pay extra special attention to what is said. You are being given the answer to at least one of the questions.

If you do not understand something, go to the teacher after school for help and do that on a regular basis, if necessary. You will not be considered stupid. Please understand, that in order to get the extra help, you have to avoid chatting or text messaging while in class. The teacher knows when you are using the cell phone, even if nothing is said. I have told my students that I will stay after school for as long as necessary as long as they have been trying in class. If they have not been paying attention, they are not welcome. Four were even in the category of not having their questions answered in class because they constantly lost the train of the lesson due to their conversations.

If the teacher sets down a set of rules, follow them. Those rules will give you an indication about what annoys the teacher and you don’t want to do that. Don’t ever challenge the teacher’s right to set the rules for the class. That is the fastest way to get a trip to the assistant principal.

Show respect to everyone. You never know who might provide you with the answer to a homework problem that has you stumped.

Seriously, ask for help when you’re lost, make up things on time, prioritize your hw (i.e – say you have a huge history project and an itty bitty english worksheet… and limited time. Forgo the worksheet and get your project done.), do homework when you get the chance, and know what you can do quickly and what you can’t – i.e, say you’re good in math, save that for when you don’t have a lot of time. Make educated guesses if you didn’t study. Don’t stress too much on tests and make sure you know various teacher’s expectations. eat a good breakfast and dress comfy everyday during finals week and chew gum if allowed. Peppermint, especially. And know how to write a thesis statement.

dont let friends get in the way of studying. dont procastinate! that gets u no where. dont be afraid to say NO to your friends if they ask you to hang out with them and you have lots of homework to do. now its ok to have fun but dont let it be all the time that u arent studying. and try not to skip a lot. i used to skip a lot and then i would just have to make up tons of work.

What you really need to know (and understand) is everything they teach you. Do that and you’ll pass very easily.
