Many times, people are drawn away from reading because they aren’t good at it. When people read, they are slow or get lost in the words–reading the same paragraph over and over again without retaining any information. The best way to overcome this is to persist on. Encourage the person to keep reading. After a while, they will become better at it and begin comprehending what has been read. This accomplishment will allow the person to enjoy the process a little more.

Also, the love for reading comes with exposure. If someone is exposed to reading at a very young age, and practically grows up reading, they will more than likely enjoy it more, than someone who didn’t read much as a child. Children become interested in reading because of the wonderful make- believe stories they read. They are able to visit a place in their minds. This view continues in adults, except with more mature ‘get-aways’, like a trip to Paris, or a great dramatic plot.

Finally, people can become a fan of reading by reading for simple enjoyment. People are forced to read in some way, everyday. Children and students read texts books and adults must read at work, through mail, etc. Therefore, reading can become annoying. However, if people allow themselves to read for fun, the idea of reading becomes much more enjoyable.

In addition, the person needs to have an environment that allows or encourages reading. If the TV’s always on or people come into your room, it’s hard to read. The reader needs a guaranteed quiet place and time, which may take some doing depending on the set-up where s/he lives.

There are so many excellent books that great selection is fully do-able.

For a child… read to them a good book that is a topic they are interested in.
