How important are honors classes in middle school?

My daughter is starting grade 6 at a small catholic school. She always gets straight A’s, but was not picked for honors math. Her standardized test was in the 80’s. Can this hurt her H.S. chances. Should I try to get her in?

Unfortunately, Honors classes are pretty important in middle school. The work that your child does in middle school will be the foundation for his or her high school classes. First, I would talk with your child, and see if he or she really cares about this class. Seeing as she scored in her 80s, the school might have a good reason for not putting her in the honors class. I took honors math classes all through middle school, and it contributed tremendously to the work I’m doing today. If she is really interested in math, and is not afraid of a challenge, talk to the teachers and see if she can get in. But if you feel that she doesn’t really want advanced math, or if she will most likely fall behind in the class, I’d suggest sticking to regular math. My suggestion is to ask the teacher if your daughter can sample a class, like go in for a day and see if she can catch up with the material, and then make your decision. Good luck! To answer your question about these classes affecting college, they really won’t. The colleges very rarely, if ever look at middle school transcipts. But as I said, the classes your daughter takes in middle school will determine what classes she can take in high school, and THAT’S important.

If she wants to go into honors math, then ya, I would try to get her in! Honors classes will help her only if she want to do honors classes like AP or something in high school. And those look good for colleges. But let me tell you after 3 years of honors math in junior high, honors math is super-tough. At least at my school. You had to maintain a B average to stay in the class. A lot of ppl did drop out. But as long as she does her homework every night and studies for all her tests, she’ll do fine. Honors classes always have more hw than regular classes, so if she does a lot of extracurricular activities, it’s really hard. I did gymnastics for all of junior high for 4 hours, 4 days a week and I just about killed myself by just taking honors math. But not I quit gym and I’m hoping that it’ll be so much easier to get hw done in high school. Whatever you decide, I hope she does well in middle/high school!

The importance of honors classes in middle school is pretty minor. Honors classes in high school are fairly important but middle school honors classes aren’t needed for that and colleges aren’t going to look at a student’s middle school acedemic record.

I agree with your mom. You just get started high school so 2 honors classes would look nice. You also need to learn how to “fit” in high school, teachers, friends, lunch, counselor, etc. Then you can take like 3 or 4 honors classes and 1 or 2 AP class. Just do whatever you can. Don’t listen to others who tell you that should take all honors and AP classes in high school. THat’s going to be crazy, frustrated!!!!! Saying is much easier than doing!!!!!!!!!!!!

dont listen to what anyone says.. there is NO record whatsoever of middle school education on a college application. ZERO. besides, honors classes are really quite difficult, and a lot more time consuming. if a person’s scores are not high enough to get into honors, then they shouldn’t push it, because then they will get a bad grade in that class. its better to get an A in a regular class than a D or C in honors.

As for high school chances, I’m not really certain what you mean by that.. You mean of getting into a good high school? Or..? I don’t know, as I went to public school. Trust me, either way, honors are generally quite hard. If she continues getting A’s in regular classes, she’ll be on her way up the ladder anyway. Don’t push her, it won’t help, and will probably hurt. Good luck! :o)

In middle school I had honors classes and it didn’t do diddly squat to my high school courses….in High School all you need is a former teachers signature stating they agree you should be in an honors class in high school and you should be approved.

At my school, I took algebra in the 7th and geometry in the 8th. Then, my freshman year, I took algebra 2. Now It’s my sophomore year and I’m taking AP statistics. If I didn’t take those Honors classes in middle school I would have taken algebra last year and geometry this year.
