Just tell her you realize what’s wrong (hopefully you do), and apologize in advance. Tell her your plan on studying harder, paying attention and turning things in on time. This should prepare her for the bad grade. Now try your best!

A progress report is just that “a report of your progress”. It is not a final grade or a semester grade. First of all, you should prepare your mom for it ahead of time. Tell her that you slacked off, or you found the course material too difficult, or whatever your reason was, and you know that you should have done better, and that you WILL do better next time. At this point, depending on the type of mom you have, she will either go ballistic and take away all of your privelages until you bring your grade up, or she will respect you for coming to her with the truth and not trying to change the grade or some other dishonest act.

Next, go to your history teacher and ask him/her what you can do to bring up your grade before the end of the semester. Ask about extra credit work, or why you received the grade that you did. If the course work is too difficult for you, think about getting a friend who is doing well in the course to tutor you. Spend more time studying history and less time doing whatever it is that kept you from getting a better grade the first time around.

Bottomline, just be honest and upfront about the grade with your mom. Don’t try to lie, hide the grade, or change the grade. Moms have a way of finding out when you are dishonest, they always do!

Tell her you did your best, that’s the best you can do. You’ll try harder and try to get your grade up. Tell her you know you can do it and that you’ll try HARDER than your best. The tough part: follow through with it!
