How can I tell the reading level of the books my child checks out at the school library?

If it hasn’t yet been Lexiled, you can type in some of the text by registering to use the Lexile analyzer tool at http://www.lexile.com/DesktopDefault.aspx?view=fa&tabindex=2&tabid=20&tabpageid=357.
The Lexile numbers correlate to grade levels as follows:
200 – 350: 1st grade
350 – 500: 2nd grade
500 – 750: 3rd grade
625 – 925: 4th grade (levels have some overlap now)
725 – 960: 5th grade
800 – 1150: 6th grade
880 – 1060: 7th grade
920 – 1130: 8th grade
1030 – 1160: 9th grade
1170 – 1220: 10th grade
1130 – 1260 : 11th grade
1180 – 1300: 12th grade
You might also ask your child’s school librarian if he/she has a list of books that are in the library. Many times it’s as simple as printing the list off and searching through the grade levels that have been given to each book — easy!
Good luck!
Here’s the AR site to search for tests. If they’re not listed, that just means that there is no AR test for that book. http://www.renlearn.com/store/quiz_home.asp
You can also look on the back of many paperbacks to find a reading level (RL). It may say RL: 2.4 or may even be encoded with something like 008-012, meaning ages 8-12.
Good luck.
