How can an education be mandatory if students can choose NOT to learn?

I would like to know. When I was in elementary school, my parents would tell me that children are required to receive an education.

Education is not mandatory. Attendance in school is. Children are required by law to attend school, but learning is up to each child. If you throw this opportunity away, it will not be given again.

Parents are required to send their children to school to a certain age (unless they are homeschooled). If the child decides NOT to learn while he/she is there–then I guess it is just a lot of wasted time for everyone! I can’t help but think that just by attending some things have to be absorbed even if the child does not want to learn…even if it is social skills or music appreciation in specials. Maybe the best way to put it is all parents are required to give their children the opportunity to get an education!

Hope that helps ;o)

The education is mandatory in that the opportunity must be provided equally for everyone. It’s a good thing. I think the fact that you realize students must CHOOSE to learn shows your own intelligence, and hopefully your own willingness to take your education seriously. 😀

The *opportunity* for an education is mandatory. Obviously you can’t force anyone to learn, but everyone deserves the chance.

By law, your parents had to make sure you are provided with a way to be educated. This can take the form of sending you to public or private school or provide home schooling. You can choose not to learn, but why would you?

The government requires you to be present at school, and requires the school to require YOU to pay attention.

But, some kids are stupid and don’t pay attention, and therefore they don’t learn. That’s why businesses are looking for college education now – just because you graduated high school doesn’t mean you know anything.
