a^2 + b^2 = 169
a + b = 17
Solve for a and b.
(The original question was:
The hypotenuse of a right triangle has a length of 13 cm. The sum of the lengths of the two other sides is 17 cm. Find the unknown side lengths.)

Perhaps try substitution —
a = 17 – b
Now put that into the first equation —
(17 – b)^2 + b^2 = 169
Then, simplify and solve for b, then insert that into the a + b = 17 equation to find a.

13 is part of the pythagorean triple 5, 12, 13 (a pythagorean triple is three numbers that can be the sides of a right triangle). I know this because my calculus teacher had us memorize a bunch of them (they come in handy when doing related rates problems.)
