does the school have the right to choose my childs electives?

My son’s school requires 2 credits in math for graduation. Last year the students took the state assesments in math and he didn’t get a minimum number on the test (the schools idea) my son has always struggled in math but has always squeeked by . he even went to summer school to try and get more help, completely voluntarily, and earned an extra (unneeded) half credit. this year at enrollment he was told he had to take it again as one of his electives. He doesn’t have to take any more assessment tests on it for the state, and they are forcing him to take it “for his benefit” meanwhile my son is not going to a 4 yr.college, he is a very talented artist, who will be attending art school. If not for math, he would be on the honor roll every year.By forcing him into an elective of math, he won’t be able to take his advanced art class, I have a meeting with the principal, mon. I was told he could reverse if chooses to,he is a junior.any advice?btw, he made it to alegbra,he knows the basics

When you talk to the principal, explain calmly and rationally that your son has proactively done his best, voluntarily over the summer, to improve his scores on the state test, which are solely used as a measure for how well the SCHOOL is doing, but at this time in his academic career it is in his best interest to concentrate on what is best for his future plans, which are to study art, so he needs to be switched to the advanced art class. Not every child fits the mold that the school has made for the perfect student, and not every one should, or we’d have no diversity in our society and everyone would be a doctor, lawyer or CEO. Have your son accompany you to the meeting, he sounds like a responsible young man, and perhaps he can handle this matter himself with you there for moral support.

Many states require minimal scores on assesment tests for graduating seniors. It is possible the reason your son is being told to take the math over is as a way to meet this requirment without taking another assesment test. To my knowledge, all graduating seniors must pass competency tests to graduate..it is part of the no child left behind act..and the school may feel that he needs the math class to ensure his passing the competency testing, again to ensure graduation. Unfortunately, if eiither of these is the case, he will have to take the math class over the art, even if he does not intend to go to a four year school. Failing to do so may mean not graduating.

Schools can deny students enrollment in electives if they feel the student needs more time in a core course. Electives are not mandatory for graduation any longer in most areas. Most high schools now require math all four years of school, even if the students are only required to earn so many credits. This can also be effected by what study tract your child may be on..college prep, general prep, vocational. Most high schools require students to do algerbra 1 &2, gemometry and depending on the study tract, calculus as well.

Meet with the prinicple. Before that, look up graduation requirements…classes needed as well as credits. If your son has met all qualifications on all levels, than you can ask they put him back in art. You can also see if there is a way to move him into a math class that would still allow him to take art. If he has that many electives to use, he can always give up something else.

If he passed it in the summer why would he need to take it again? If that’s truly the case then, no, he shouldn’t need to take it. Schools have to place students in remedial programs if they’ve done poorly on a state assessment – its sometimes required of the school… I understand your issues with this – maybe the principal could adjust things…just go in there friendly and not witchy – it can make all the difference.

How can he take the same course and have it count for credit? Hmmm….

If you son has already passes his state assessment tests, then how can he be required to take this class again? This sounds fishy to me.

At my school students are placed if they haven’t passed the test yet. Otherwise their electives are up to them.

Good luck Monday.
