First of all, it is not illegal for teachers to confiscate a students possessions if 1) they are against school policy, 2) are causing a disruption in class, 3) are being used in an improper manner that could be construed as cheating or 4) is seen as a danger to others.

If there are legitimate reasons for you to call your mom they need to be discussed with your teachers. This should be done by you and your mom. Teachers are willing to work with you if you come to them and explain the situation and if it doesn’t break school policy. If there is a school policy about cell phones any exceptions to the rules will need to be discussed with administration also. They will be able to give permission if the situation warrants you calling home during school hours.

Ok well I am actually a teenager and am always wanting to use my cell phone at school. I have gotten in trouble for using it in the hallway as well. I really don’t see the big deal with being able to use it inbetween classes and at lunch. Kids are constantly sneaking them anyways. Then just have the rule that they aren’t aloud to use them or have them on when in class.

Well, this will really date me! There used to be no need for kids to have phones in school. I managed to make it through college without one as did my husband and all of my friends! If one needed to call mom or dad, they would go to the office and call. I can understand being a kid these days and wanting to use a phone…hey it’s cool and it’s technology. But I know for a fact by having a kid in school that it’s mostly just a distraction from learning. I agree with them having confiscated your phone. The office and your mom can set up times/reasons for you to call at the office.
