Do you think its a good idea to leave school at 16?

Just wondering, I kind of wanted to leave at 16 and get a job as a milkman and then go onto a HGV driver…

Or do you think in todays society its best to get a good education incase you need it?

Trust me, you are better off with the high school diploma. Most companies now won’t hire someone without one. Besides, to get a CDL, you have to be 18 anyways, so you might as well finish high school first.

Why do you want to leave school at 16? I can understand wanting a new start in life, but do you really think you can get a part-time job and go to college at the same time? It seems more difficult to me than just high school. Do you think you can qualify for college at 16? If you’re intelligent and motivated, then I’d say try it for a year. If it doesn’t work, then return to high school.

Admittedly, college isn’t for everyone. But, high school pretty much ought to be.

(1) You might someday want to do something else with your life and it’s a heck of a lot easier to get that basic education thing out of the way now than it is to try and go back later.

(2) If you ever intend to enter a trade school (sometimes even a truck driving school), you’ll need that diploma (or GED).

(3) Even if you don’t expect to use your diploma, simply having it says you’ve stuck with something – and that’s not a bad thing.

(4) A LOT of employers won’t even consider an application of someone without that high school diploma. You would be severely limiting your choices of jobs for the rest of your life.

You will need a high school diploma or a GED. You never know what will happen down the road and it’s a good thing to at least have that. I went to school with a guy who dropped out on his 16th birthday. He thought he’d work at a local racing stable for the rest of his life. It worked out for 4 years and then the stable was sold and he was out of a job and hasn’t found another one since that happened last year. Everywhere he looks to get a job they want someone with at least a high school education. You might have plans now that look good, but just be prepared for what may lie ahead.

Think about it again when you are 16. If you can get a job that promises a future, and will provide you with enough money to make a mortgage payment or pay rent, pay all the bills – heat, electricity, insurance, food, telephone, cable, entertainment – support a family, make a car payment, save for retirement, etc., then you might want to consider it. However, you may find that even companies hiring drivers look for people with high school graduation. Best of luck.

Look up the Bureau of Labor Statistics and you’ll see how important it is to stay in school. Aside from huge disparities in earning potential over an employee’s working life, 80% of prisoners in federal and state prisons don’t have a high school diploma OR a GED. Because they can’t find work without having finished high school, they turn to a life of crime just to pay the bills.

You could probably find a job picking produce or flipping burgers, but do you really want to be doing either until the day you die? You won’t ever be able to retire or own property because everything you earn will go to groceries, rent, and utilities. Hell, you won’t even be able to pay for a car, gas, and insurance.

If you feel the need to work, find a part-time job, but STAY IN SCHOOL!

Get an education. The company my husband works for won’t even hire a labourer without a Grade 12 education. You will find that a lot out there in the big mean world. Your chances of getting better paying jobs really does depend on the amount of formal education you have.

leaving school before you graduate is always a stupid idea. you don’t know that the job you want is going to be able to support you no matter what, and whith an education you’re more likely to get a job elsewhere.

You need an education, believe me. Go ahead and get your High School Diploma, that way if you want to do something else later, you can.
