Do you agree..?

The fact that the spelling is far from phonetic – the same combinations of letters can stand for totally different words, like the “ough” in “tough”, “though”, “drought”, etc.

I completly agree! That is why they say English is one of the hardest languages to learn!

The fact is:

Some words are phonetic, Some words are not phonetic.

That is why I feel kids need to know how to use phonetics and know what sight words are.

English has as many exceptions to the rules as there are rules!!! LOL

I agree with you. There is the classic joke of “fish” being spelt “ghoti” where the gh is pronounced as in rough, the o as in women, and the ti as in nation.

The english laguage is considered the hardest to learn. I’m still finding out stuff about it.. I’d really like to learn japanese though.
